According to a recent study by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), metal recycling can decrease greenhouse emissions by 300 million to 500 million tons. To that end, today, several companies have created numerous innovative technologies that make recycling metals more efficient than ever before.For example, scrap metal that comes to recycling facilities would typically be sorted by hand. Today, however, sensors and sorting machines have replaced these manual tasks. An X-ray technology that sorts non-magnetic metals, allowing for a quicker recycling process and the retention of more recyclable material, is slowly taking over the market. There is also an emerging laser object detection (LOD) technology, which is expected to have a strong value in the U.S. markets. This new LOD uses a laser scan across the ferrous metals and nonferrous metal scrap-carrying conveyor belt to identify non-metallics such as wood, rubber tubes, or glass and remove them from the metal stream. This helps deliver a cleaner scrap product and ensures that anything unwanted in the scrap mix stays out. While laser methods for automatic scrap metal sorting holds out the potential to offer massive savings at recycling plants, in the long run, it also holds the promise for significant economic savings. In addition to innovations in the recycling process, some researchers are also seeking to improve the process by understanding consumers better. For example, some companies are developing different approaches to recycling, including converting waste into biofuels through gasification. By chemically recycling carbon molecules from waste, they are planning to create products and transportation fuels. High tech solutions such as these hold the potential to make recycling a far less expensive and more efficient process.
